Recycling our English

Board games may be old school but they are great for kids for different reasons. They’re still a super-fun way to teach kids about following rules, taking turns, counting spaces, and accepting rewards and consequences.

In addition, board games offer interactive English language practice in a learner-centered, low-stress environment.

I have designed two easy board games for Level 5 and Level 6 that require the students to produce certain types of expressions, so they practice a variety of vocabulary, grammatical patterns, and functional meanings.

The Crazy Weather Forecast

The Crazy Weather Forecast is the tittle of a short proyect developed during March by my students in level 3.

Do you watch the news? And the weather forecast? These both questions were the beginning of a short proyect related to the weather. During the first week, children had to watch different weather forecast in order to learn as much as they could about this type of programmes.

Then, they had to write the programme script in groups of three deciding which places they are going to talk about and the weather for “today” . It was a good opportunity to see where we live , where other members of our  families live or even, where other Provinces of Spain are situated.

The Crazy Weather Forecast é o título dun pequeno proxecto levado a cabo polos alumnos de 3º. Partindo da pregunta Vedes os tempo na tele? iniciamos este proxecto no que os rapaces, antes de nada, tiveron que ver o avnce metereolóxico durante unha semana para facerse coas características deste tipo de programas.

De seguido, escribiron o guión do programa traballando en grupos de tres. Tiveron que decidir de que lugares ían falar e do tempo en cada un deles. Foi unha boa oportunidade para ver onde vivimos, onde viven outras persoas que coñecemos e para ver onde se sitúan outras provincias españolas.

A Brief Proyect about Madrid

Over the past week, students in Level 4 were working on a brief research project about the capital city of Spain: Madrid. They looked for information about this city and shared them with their fellows. Finally, they all together designed a big poster. Take a look at this video.

Madrastra of English

‘Madrasta of English é o nome da páxina web que creou a profesora María Cristina Peña, unha docente que ao longo dos seus anos como profesional do ensino foi recollendo diferentes materiais en torno á materia de Inglés dirixidos aos distintos niveis académicos.

A páxina ten unha estrutura moi sinxela, polo que desenvolverse a través das súas opcións de menú resulta intuitivo. Que recursos podemos consultar? Dende tarxetas para traballar o vocabulario a actividades para repasar os principais aspectos da gramática. Tamén hai exercicios para deleterar, Reading, Writing e Listening. Nese sentido, o site ‘Madrasta of English‘ incorpora un apartado específico dedicado á Fonética no que, por exemplo, a súa creadora incluíu unha táboa onde os alumnos poden escoitar todos os sons fonéticos da legua inglesa.

Wiki de cienciasOtra parte importante é a dedicada aos dicionarios on-line, onde se engadiron enlaces que levan ás páxinas de Oxford, Cambridge e McMillan. Así mesmo, destaca o dicionario visual Merriam Webster formado por máis de 6.000 imaxes coas súas respectivas descricións. Mentres tanto, e pensando no alumnado de Infantil e de Primaria, encontramos distintas cancións acompañadas de divertidas imaxes para que empecen a pronunciar as súas primeiras palabras en inglés.

Wiki de cienciasXunto á páxina ‘Madrasta of English‘, María Cristina Peña creou tamén unha wiki de sciencies (ciencias) para os estudantes de 3º de Primaria con unidades dedicadas ao corpo humano, a auga, as plantas, as paisaxes, os sentidos… Como materiais de apoio, introduciu xogos e vídeos explicativos para axudarlles a entender dun modo ameno e divertido os aspectos principais de cada unha destas unidades.

Living and Non living things posters

The first lesson of our project in level 4 was about “Living and Non living things”.And we have worked very hard!

A primeira lección do noso proxecto en 4º foi sobre os SERES VIVOS e a MATERIA INERTE. E realmente traballamos arreo!

After having recalled what we knew about this topic and watching a ppt with a video  that help us  learn more about Living and Non living things, we decided to organise an exhibition. Students brought to school lots of photos and living and non living things so our exhibition was a success!

Despois de falar un pouco sobre o tema para ver que cales eran os coñecementos previos que tiñamos e de ver unha presentación cun video que nos axudou a aprender algo máis sobre os seres vivos e a materia inerte, decidimos organizar unha exposición. Os rapaces trouxeron a clase unha morea de fotos e obxectos e seres vivos polo que a nosa exposición foi un éxito!

Then, we created a model poster together to demostrate then how to develop this activity.

Finally, they worked in groups and they had to agree about how to desing the poster.Each student collaboted with the activity by using their skills, for example, one of the students wrote, another one drew or cut,etc….

Finalmente, traballaron en grupos e tuveron que porse dacordo no diseño do seu mural. Cada rapaz colaborou según as súas habilidades así, un deles escribíu o texto, outro dibuxou ou recortou, etc…

The end of the school year is around the corner and I think that we have all earned a well-deserved break. But before “closing for the holiday”, let us show our works.
